SFA Discussion Time

Step 1 –

1. Recognize that an emergency exists
2. What is normal and not normal
3. Medical Conditions
   1. Diabetes
   2. Strokes
   3. Seizures
   4. Heart Attacks
   5. Others
4. You are not here to be a hero
5. You will not save the person’s life
6. The key is to initiate EMS
7. They have the training, skills, and equipment to save a person’s life

Step 2 – Decide to Act

1. Good Samaritan Law
2. Protects you
3. Does not protect the company
4. Give care to your comfort level
5. What you do for a family member is more than a friend and is more than a stranger

Step 3 – Initiate EMS

Step 4 – Give care to your comfort level

1. Skills Activities
2. Put on Gloves
3. Clean and Unclean
4. Sterile
5. Location of gloves
6. Check injured or ill adult
7. Most of time done in a sitting position
8. Do not place on the floor- keep sitting unless required for CPR/AED

Do a demo discussion followed by 2-3 more practices

Talk about need for continued practice because when emergencies occur they forget or panic

Control Bleeding

1. Makeshift not pretty bandages
2. Saturated bandages
3. Roll and tie the bandage

Remove dirty gloves

1. Clean method
2. Disposal of gloves
